The Session sets an annual minimum budget of 10 percent of pledged giving, plus special offerings, for local and foreign missions.  We support mission projects in Central Asia, Colombia, El Salvador and Zambia.  Local organizations receiving support include ECHHO, Jefferson County Food Bank, Jefferson County MASH, Boy Scouts,Jumping Mouse, Jefferson Teen Center and Habitat for Humanity.  We also maintain a "sister church" relationship with the Neah Bay Presbyterian Church on the Makah Indian Reservation.

Our most ambitious mission project to date is with the village of Santa Elena, El Salvador, a community created in 1985 for refugees of the country's civil war.  In 1999 a work team from First Pres made an initial visit and added a roof to the community building's patio.  Subsequent visits included supporting medical clinics conducted by Port Townsend and El Salvadoran doctors, helping plant a cornfield and delivery of a computer and printer for a new school .  Then, in 2008, the Session approved a Mission Committee proposal to build homes for Santa Elena's residents.  Some $70,000 was raised, not only from the congregation, but also from nearby Presbyterian churches, Port Townsend residents and two Salvadoran restaurants in Seattle.

The 13 Casa de Dignidad houses were completed in 2009 and quilts from our Prayers & Squares group were presented to the new homeowners and to other Salvadorans involved in the project.   Learn more..........

Recent involvement with the community has included funding weekly visits by a Protestant pastor and the donation of sewing machines plus material and sewing classes.

In addition to mission giving, contributions to the Deacons permit the local donation of food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas, school supplies for needy children and emergency basic needs for at-risk residents such as rent, food and utilities.

Winter Shelter

Our church each winter provides volunteer staffing for a week at the community's homeless shelter.

Senior Meals

Each Thursday, First Pres volunteers assist at the Community Center in support of the Port Townsend Senior Association's Senior Meals Program.

As a result of the bequests of two members, our church  awards both music and college scholarships.

Jean Marriott Scholarships

These scholarships are given to children in the church family to further their music studies.

Sarah "Dusty" Westall Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to Port Townsend students attending Christian-related colleges and universities.
